Phoenix is a beautiful place for outdoor family photos, but the timing of your session matters more here than it does in many other places.
The sun is strong, the desert reflects light, and the temperature can change the entire feel of a session. Choosing the right start time can help with softer light, less squinting, better skin tones, and a more comfortable experience for your family.
For most outdoor family photos in Phoenix, the best time is close to sunrise or sunset. Those times usually give us the best mix of light, comfort, and natural color.
If you are planning family photos in Phoenix, here is how I think through timing, light, seasons, and location choice.
The Quick Answer: Sunrise or Sunset Usually Works Best
For most outdoor family photo sessions, I recommend either early morning or late afternoon.
Sunrise and sunset both give us softer light because the sun is lower in the sky. That makes a big difference in Phoenix, especially at desert locations where there may not be much shade.
Midday sun can create harsh shadows, bright highlights, and a lot of squinting. It can still work in certain shaded locations, but it usually takes more planning.
If your schedule is flexible, sunrise or sunset is almost always the better starting point.
Sunset Family Photos in Phoenix
Sunset is the most popular time for outdoor family photos, and for good reason.
The light is warmer, the desert starts to soften, and the timing often works better around school, work, and naps. For families with older kids, sunset is usually the easiest recommendation.
A sunset session does not usually start at the exact sunset time. We typically begin before sunset so there is enough time to use the best light before it drops behind mountains, trees, or buildings.
That matters at places like South Mountain, Scorpion Gulch, White Tank Mountain Regional Park, and Usery Mountain Regional Park. The light can change quickly at desert locations, so the start time needs to be planned around the location, not just the sunset time on a weather app.
Sunset is a great choice if you want warm desert color, softer shadows, and a relaxed evening feel.
Sunrise Family Photos in Phoenix
Sunrise sessions are underrated, especially in warmer months.
In Phoenix, summer evenings can still be very hot. Morning sessions are often cooler, quieter, and easier for families with young kids who are happiest earlier in the day.
Sunrise can be a good fit if your family wants:
- Cooler temperatures
- Fewer people at popular locations
- Softer morning light
- A calmer start to the day
- A better schedule for toddlers or younger kids
Some families hear “sunrise” and immediately think it sounds too early. I get it. But during hotter parts of the year, an early session can be much more comfortable than trying to make everyone smile through a hot evening.
Sunrise can work especially well at parks, open desert locations, and places where we want a quieter feel.

What About Midday Family Photos?
Midday is usually not my first choice for outdoor family photos in Phoenix, but it can work in the right situation.
The biggest issue is overhead sun. When the sun is high, it can create shadows under the eyes, bright spots on faces, and harsh contrast. That is not ideal for relaxed family portraits.
If midday is the only option, I look for locations with shade, trees, covered walkways, buildings, walls, or other features that help soften the light.
Midday sessions can work better at:
- Shaded parks
- Urban locations
- Areas with architecture
- Locations with covered walkways
- Indoor or semi-indoor spaces
- Winter sessions when the sun is lower
For open desert locations, I usually try to avoid midday unless there is a specific reason we need to shoot then.
Best Time for Family Photos by Season
Phoenix has photo weather for much of the year, but the best session time changes with the season.
Spring
Spring is one of the best times for family photos in Phoenix.
The weather is usually comfortable, the desert can have more color, and families are not dealing with the extreme heat yet. Sunrise and sunset both work well in spring, depending on your schedule and location.
Summer
Summer needs the most planning.
For outdoor family photos in Phoenix during summer, sunrise is usually the safest choice. It is cooler, quieter, and more comfortable for kids.
Late evening can sometimes work, but it often depends on the family, the location, and the temperature. Midday outdoor sessions are usually not ideal during summer unless we have a shaded or indoor option.
Fall
Fall is one of the busiest seasons for family photos.
The weather starts to improve, sunset sessions become easier, and many families schedule updated photos for holiday cards. If you want a weekend sunset session in fall, it is smart to plan ahead.
Winter
Winter is one of the easiest seasons for family photos in Phoenix.
The weather is cooler, the light can stay softer longer, and earlier sunsets can be helpful for families with younger kids. You do not have to keep everyone out late to get good light.
Winter desert sessions can look beautiful because the temperature is comfortable and the light is easier to work with.
How Location Changes the Best Start Time
The best time of day is not the same for every location.
Some places have mountains that block the sun early. Some have open sky and very little shade. Some have trees, buildings, stone walls, or water that change how the light works.
That is why I do not choose start times based only on sunrise or sunset. I think about how the light moves through the actual location.
For example, Scorpion Gulch at South Mountain gives us stone walls, windows, stairs, and shaded areas that help shape the light. White Tank Mountain Regional Park has a more open West Valley desert feel. Usery Mountain Regional Park gives more elevation and mountain depth. The Salt River has water, trees, reflections, and a completely different type of light.
Each location has its own rhythm.
That is one of the reasons planning matters. The right location at the wrong time can be harder than a simple location with great light.
Best Locations for Morning or Sunset Family Photos
Different Phoenix locations work better at different times of day.
For sunset family photos, desert locations can be beautiful because the warmer light brings out the color in the rocks, mountains, and plants. Locations like Scorpion Gulch, White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Usery Mountain Regional Park, and South Mountain can all work well when planned around the light.
For sunrise sessions, quieter parks and open desert areas can be a great fit. Morning light can feel softer and calmer, and popular locations are often less crowded.
For families with young kids, I also think about parking, walking distance, bathrooms, shade, and how easy it will be to keep everyone comfortable.
The best location is not always the most dramatic one. It is the one that fits your family, your schedule, and the kind of experience you want.
How I Help Choose the Right Time
You do not need to figure this out on your own.
When you book a family session, I help recommend the start time based on the season, location, your kids’ ages, the temperature, and the kind of look you want for your photos.
Some families need an early session because their kids are happiest in the morning. Some families do better closer to sunset. Some locations need more time before the sun drops behind the mountains. Others give us more flexibility.
The goal is to plan the session so the light works well and your family feels comfortable.
That is what usually leads to better photos.
Final Thoughts
For outdoor family photos in Phoenix, the best time of day is usually close to sunrise or sunset.
Sunset is the easiest and most popular choice for many families. Sunrise can be better during warmer months or for younger kids who do best earlier in the day. Midday can work, but it needs the right location and more careful planning.
The right timing helps the session feel easier, keeps everyone more comfortable, and gives us better light to work with.
