Phoenix is a beautiful place for outdoor family photos, but the sun here is not something to ignore.

The time of day you choose can make a big difference in how your photos look and how comfortable your session feels. Softer light means less squinting, better skin tones, warmer backgrounds, and an easier experience for kids.

For most outdoor family photos in Phoenix, the best time is close to sunrise or sunset. These times give us softer light, cooler temperatures, and a more relaxed setting than the middle of the day.

The Best Time for Outdoor Family Photos in Phoenix

For most families, I recommend scheduling outdoor photos during golden hour.

Golden hour is the time shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when the sun is lower in the sky and the light is softer. In Phoenix, this matters because midday sun can be very bright and harsh, especially in open desert locations.

Golden hour helps with softer light on faces, less squinting, warmer desert color, more flattering skin tones, and a more comfortable session overall.

This is why sunset and sunrise are usually the best options for Phoenix family photography.

Sunset Family Photos

Sunset is usually the easiest choice for most families.

The light is warm, the desert starts to cool down, and the timing often works better around school, work, and naps. For families with older kids, sunset is usually my first recommendation.

A sunset session does not start at the exact sunset time. We usually begin before sunset so we have time to use the best light before it drops behind the mountains or trees.

This is especially important at desert locations like South Mountain, White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Usery Mountain Regional Park, and Papago Park, where the light can change quickly near the end of the day.

If you are deciding between desert locations, my posts on Usery Mountain Regional Park photo sessions, White Tank Mountain Regional Park photo sessions [link to White Tank blog post], and South Mountain’s Scorpion Gulch [link to Scorpion Gulch blog post] can help you compare the look and feel of each location.

Sunrise Family Photos

Sunrise can be a great option, especially during warmer months.

Phoenix evenings can still be hot in late spring, summer, and early fall. Morning sessions are often cooler, quieter, and easier for younger kids who are happiest earlier in the day.

Sunrise can be a good fit if you want cooler temperatures, less crowded locations, soft morning light, a calmer feel, or a better schedule for toddlers and young kids.

Locations like Papago Park, Anthem Community Park, and some desert areas can work really well in the morning.

If you are considering a park-style session instead of a full desert location, Anthem Community Park photo sessions [link to Anthem blog post] can be a good place to start.

Can Midday Family Photos Work?

Midday is not usually my first choice for outdoor family photos in Phoenix, but it can work with the right location.

The challenge is that the sun is high overhead, which can create harsh shadows, bright spots, and squinting. If midday is the only option, I look for places with shade, trees, walls, covered walkways, or buildings that can soften the light.

Midday sessions usually work better in shaded parks, urban locations, or places with architectural cover. They can also be more manageable during winter when the sun is lower and the temperatures are cooler.

For the best outdoor family photos, sunrise or sunset is still usually the better choice.

Best Seasons for Outdoor Family Photos in Phoenix

Phoenix has good photo weather for much of the year, but each season has a different feel.

Spring

Spring is one of the best times for outdoor family photos in Phoenix. The weather is usually comfortable, the desert can have more color, and families are not dealing with the extreme summer heat yet.

Spring is a great time for desert locations, parks, and family sessions with younger kids.

Summer

Summer sessions need more planning. Sunrise is often the best choice because it is cooler and more comfortable. Very late evening can also work, but midday outdoor sessions are usually not ideal unless we have a shaded location.

If we are using a public park or preserve, it is also smart to check the official park information before your session for hours, parking, entrance fees, or seasonal notices. The City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation website and Maricopa County Parks website [external link to Maricopa County Parks] are helpful resources for location details.

Fall

Fall is one of the busiest seasons for family photos. The weather improves, sunset sessions feel easier, and many families schedule updated photos for holiday cards.

Because fall is popular, it is smart to plan ahead if you want a specific weekend or a session close to sunset.

Winter

Winter is underrated for family photos in Phoenix. The light can stay softer longer, the temperatures are comfortable, and earlier sunsets can be easier for families with young kids.

Winter can be especially nice for desert sessions because the cooler temperatures make it easier to enjoy the location.

How I Help You Choose the Right Time

You do not need to figure out the exact timing by yourself.

When you book a family session, I help recommend the start time based on the season, location, sunset or sunrise time, your kids’ ages, and the kind of look you want.

Some locations need earlier start times. Others look better closer to sunset. Some work better in the morning. The goal is to plan your session around good light and a comfortable experience for your family.

Best Phoenix Locations for Outdoor Family Photos

The best time of day also depends on the location.

Some places photograph better at sunrise. Others work best closer to sunset. Some locations have enough shade to give us more flexibility.

A few Phoenix-area locations I often consider for outdoor family sessions include Anthem Community Park, Papago Park, South Mountain, White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Usery Mountain Regional Park, Manistee Ranch Park, Sahuaro Ranch Park, Desert Botanical Garden, and Riparian Preserve.

Each location has a different look, parking situation, light pattern, and comfort level for kids. That is why choosing the time and location together usually gives better results than picking one without thinking about the other.

Final Thoughts

For outdoor family photos in Phoenix, the best time is usually close to sunrise or sunset.

Sunset is often the easiest choice for most families. Sunrise can be better during hotter months or for younger kids who do best in the morning. Midday can work, but it needs the right location and more planning.

The right timing helps your family feel more comfortable, gives us better light, and makes the whole session easier.

If you are planning family photos in Phoenix, I would be happy to help you choose a location and session time that fits your family.
